9.11.13

A mild interlude.

I must take a moment, away from recounting my travels, to speak of my longing, for home, or a home.  As I have now finally left Sicily, after nearly three months there (my experience of which, I shall fill you in on, in good time) & moved onto Rome, the beautiful Sicilian summer I was happily experiencing, until only last weekend, has come to an end & in its place, a real Italian Autumn has taken grip.

Here in Rome, the weather is much akin to an English climate, at any time of the year, really.  You will wake to sunshine, although, the temperature will be bitterly cold & then, as you wrap up in your snugliest boyfriend sweater, the heat suddenly emerges & you are at once, stripped back to nothing but a T-shirt.  Then just as you settle into the heat, out come the ominous dark clouds & down comes the rain.  Light at first, gradually building to a heavy down pour.  Then, in a blink of an eye, it's sunny again.

This erratic behaviour doesn't bother me, but it does bring on a feeling of longing.  Longing for a home I no longer have & so utterly want & need.

Oh to be wrapped up in the softest of blankets, my feet warmed by a pair of chunky knit socks.   Mr Pig snoring dreamily next to me, as I watch a, no-doubt, festive film, most likely in black & white.  A roaring fire in the room, its heat protecting me against the rain, beating heavily on the window panes.  A plate, laden with squidgy chocolate brownies, resting on the arm of the sofa & just to add to my glutenous comforting, a mug of hot chocolate on the coffee table, just within reach.  Real hot chocolate mind.  Melted down bars of dark chocolate, with swirls of warm milk poured in.  Non of this powdered malarkey.

The Christmas tree, alight in the corner.  Adorned with all manor of delicately decorated baubles, picked up from Christmas markets all over the world.  Small, wrapped gifts, sitting neatly under it.  Each one special & hand picked.  Not one bought from a store.  Not a chain, anyway.  Some made by me personally, others sourced from ethically minded small businesses.  Wrapped in brown paper, white crochet lace ribbon, tied neatly around & hand decorated paper labels attached.

Alas, here I am, in Italy, alone.  Without a home.  Without my Pig.  Without...A lot of things.  Although, I do have a plate of brownies, a blanket, some nice snugly socks, Sir Fleming bought me & thankfully I have the ability to watch films on my laptop.  I suppose for now, this will simply have to do.

The beginning of the end.

After a tumultuous few months, mère flitting off to the sun on a permanent basis, selling off the majority of my possessions & finding someone trustworthy to look after Mr Pig, I finally packed my over-sized rucksack & hopped on a flight out of England just over a week ago, for the last time in what could be a long time.

My first stop was Guernsey, in the Channel Islands, to spend time with my famille over my birthday.

Yes, you could argue that this isn't really getting out of the UK, but considering you can't spend Guernsey money in the UK, the laws are different & you generally get free parking, I'm still considering it my first stop.

Despite spending all my summers in Guernsey, as a child, & even being christened there, eight years had passed since my last visit & so I was keen to return.

My grandparents collected me from the airport & I stayed with them for the duration of my stay.  They've lived in their house for nearly thirty years & it hasn't changed a bit from when I was last there.  The same comforting smell, shell ornaments & the most beautiful & extensive garden.

My grandpa grows all manor of fruit & vegetables & every meal time consists of something from the garden.  Breakfast was toast, made with bread, my grandma baked herself & atop it was laden with jam, also made by my grandma, with fruit grown by my grandpa in the garden.  Nothing goes to waste.

We drove around the island a lot & took in the sights.  The sea views are wonderfully scenic.  On my birthday grandma & I took the small boat over to Herm island for the day.  It's very beautiful, but very small.  They have a few eateries, lovely beaches, a couple of gift shops & plenty of steep hills to climb.

Herm hosts a lot of visitors that stay in the campsites or rent the cottages out.  I think, if the weather was hot & sunny, I could definitely spend a week there, just strolling through the woodlands & lounging on the beach.

On the Saturday my brother came to pick me up & we went into town for lunch.  It was lovely seeing him, as it'd been over two years since he last visited me in England & I missed him a lot.  We caught up with each others gossip, had a stroll through town, ate some gelato & then went back to his new home, which is amazing!  The bathroom alone made me want to stay!

Later in the evening we went into town for dinner & cocktails & then met up with his girlfriend, who was out celebrating her birthday, from earlier in the week.  Guernsey's nightlife is a new experience for me, I was only young when I lived there & although I was eighteen the last time I visited, I had gone over with mère, so partying wasn't really on the agenda.

We went to a place called the Townhouse, which was packed with people raving out to electro & techno.  Myself, dressed in a tux jacket, felt like a spanner in the corner.  The last time I went out to a rave I was in my own drug fueled world.  Stone cold sober, getting elbowed, isn't the one

It's also worth adding how attractive men, turn so very unattractive, when dodgy dance moves are employed & woman need to be more aware of back fat & pot bellies when dressing.  I saw far too many unsightly dressed, drunken girls, stumbling around.  Literally puts me off drinking entirely!

Guernsey has changed so much since I was young.  Now there are a lot of foreigners, teenage mothers & a large dent of the population are even on benefits, which I wasn't even aware you could get in Guernsey!  But, the narrow roads, views of the sea & simple way of life, are all still as beautiful as they were when I was a child.

Urgent Help Needed!

Due to circumstances, out of my control, I am in desperate need for someone to foster Mr Pig for a couple of months.

I have to leave my home at the end of July & if I am not able to find someone to take care of him for the short period, then I fear I may have to re-home him, which would break my heart into a million pieces & I don't think I would recover!

He is incredible loving & just wants to be close & snuggle.  I take him for a twenty/thirty minute walk around the park each day, which is enough for him.  He does need his ears cleaned every other day, but it's very simple & he's used to it, although he does like to squirm sometimes.

Mr Pig has a pet passport & can travel to Europe easily.  I need someone to foster him for a few short months, until I can be reunited with him.  I'm happy to pay for his food & anything else he might need.

Please help & share!
Thank you

When I awoke, you spoke through the mist of the mystic bliss.

I've been home for a little while now & I've really appreciated getting back to a sea view.

I've gone back to working part-time & am mostly spending my free time eating cake with friends.

My friend Suz came for a visit last Monday & we went to the Cupcake Café for breakfast, which consisted of giant chunks of cake & milkshakes.  It's never too early for cake!

I may have indulged in a fry-up for lunch...
But we did at least take a long walk along the beach, so that cancels it all out...kinda.

In continuation of my cake eating; it was my friend Maria's birthday last week, so I thought I would whip my Primrose Bakery Book out & try out another recipe.  I made raspberry cupcakes with white chocolate buttercream icing, sprinkled with edible gold glitter, naturally.  They seemed to go down quite well.

Despite all this cake eating, I am attempting to lose the weight I gained in London & have abandoned my car on the drive & am walking the 3.5mile round trip to work each day.  I'm knackered & my legs & bum really hurt, but I'm hoping that's a good sign & I'll have matchstick legs by the time the weather heats up!

I think Mr Pig is happy I'm home.  I've missed his snuggles.

He had surgery a little while before I left for London & now he's been left with a floppy ear.
He's such a patchwork dog, but I love him.

2013 is very much about finding what makes me happy.  So far this has included spending time with friends, indulging my sweet tooth & snuggles with Pig.  I'm really looking forward to the weather heating up, being able to get my little tanned legs out, planting lavender in the garden & reading my new Eva Rice book.  Yes, I am a (soon to be) twenty six year old granny & you know what, I'm totes cool with that.  Plus, I've got a little adventure I'm planning with Miss Wall, (details to come) which I'm really looking forward to.

Pig Post!

This is more of a pig update really...(for all those Mr Piggles fans out there)

I took Mr Piggles back to the vets yesterday, for a check-up on his ears.  (Always problems with his ears! Groan.)  They're finally all good, although he still pretends to be deaf when you call him...unless you say dîner (yes, he knows French now, honest).

Whilst I was there I got the vet to check on his back legs, as EVERYONE had been pointing out how he's been walking oddly on them.  Turns out my ickle baby boy has bloody arthritis!  I mean honestly, he's not even four yet!

So now dear Mr Piggles is on yet another medication.  Poor dawg.

Pig Post!

The sun has finally come out!  Hoorah!

To celebrate, Mr Piggles has been out enjoying the sunshine in the jardin.

Let's hope the sun is here to stay now, as the rain is such a drain!

Bonne Année

Bonne Année mes amis!!!

I spent New Year's Eve snuggled up on the couch with Mr Piggles, wolfing down another slice of the Girdlebuster (will it ever end!?) & watching Breakfast At Tiffany's.

Midway through the film I randomly decided to make another batch of mince pies.  This time I decided to make sweet pastry & although they're still not Nigella's standards, they do taste much better.

In fact, I was making said mince pies when mère informed me it was officially 2012!!!

So now that we are in a new year, it's time to make those New Year's Resolutions:

Numéro un: After spending rather excessively on myself over the holidays, I think it's time to contemplate being a little more selfless & a lot less selfish!  I'll never be Mother Teresa, but every good deed & all that.

Numéro deux:  Although I made this resolution last year & clearly didn't keep it too long, I shall endeavor to make it once more; I want to attempt to try to look after myself.  Eat healthily, get my hair & nails did, that kinda thing.  Keep myself looking so fresh & so clean clean.

To be honest, I think that's about it for 2012.  Why demand too much of myself.  I'm a lazy bugger after all.

 Happy 2012 guys!

Happy Boxing Day!

Today has mostly been spent taking Mr Piggles for his Boxing Day walk, watching my new French films & eating the Girdlebuster I made...

Unfortunately, although I am twenty four years old, I am still teething (evil wisdom tooth), the pain of which is putting me off eating.  There is so much food in the house, I don't know if we'll ever get through it!  I haven't even made my festive bubble & squeak with bacon, poached egg & hollandaise sauce!  Maybe tomorrow.

Love Affair

Now that the weather has turned bitterly cold, it is officially time to snuggle up & pull on the socks.  But socks don't have to be boring, especially when they're fair isle knit & come in an array of appealing colours!

Toast have a wonderful selection of socks, both long & short, at reasonable prices.  They also do the best cashmere bedsocks!  I have a pair in cerise which have been keeping my paws warm at night.  Unfortunately Mr Piggles likes them very much too & has nibbled a few holes in them.

If you're still looking for Christmas gift ideas...

Le Temps De Poulet!

Have returned from a brief, but lovely, visit to my hometown, The Oaks.  FINALLY used up my WHOLE FREE poulet at Nando's!  Been hoarding that for time!  Myself, Ms Warner, Miss James, The Ex-Roomie, Lady Rawlinson & Jospeh all gathered for a poulet feast!  I would like to say, I had a (bottomless) Coke for the first time in over a week!  I hope you're proud...Of the giving up bit, not the having one...Anyway, it was so nice to see everyone & all together too.  I miss everyone so much, it's so hard being on my own here by the coast.  Sad times.

I did also get my car serviced too whilst I was in town & he his so shiny shiny now!  I will admit, I only clean my car once a year...When he gets serviced.  It's shameful, I know.  But it's like money going to waste when he gets dirty again within a nano second!  I'd rather spend the money on Vogue!  Precious nourishing Vogue.  [sigh]

When I got back today I somehow managed to break another bloody nail, get this, pulling up my handbrake!  I kid you not.  It bloody hurt too.  What's worse is, I always get my nails done in The Oaks & I decided to be kind to my fragile purse strings & not bother...Then I break a nail.  FML!  I need to find a new salon more local to me.  STAT!

On a plus side, I'm getting very excited about my Jeffrey Campbell Litas!  I got an email today to say they'd been dispatched.  Mère's currently staying in The Oaks with Mr Piggles & I have work the rest of the week, so I'll cry large small tears if I have problems with delivery!  It's hard enough when I order from MAC!  Once they have arrived, providing they actually fit, I shall post piccies to further entertain you.  Jokes.

Until then, it's just me, at home, on my own, without Mr Piggles to snuggle.  [sniff sniff]

Wrapped up like a Christmas present...That's how I like my dawgs!
